Biratnagar: Despite experiencing heavy rainfall lately, has managed to avoid the inundation issues that plagued the area in previous monsoons. This positive outcome is attributed to the timely and proactive measures taken by the Biratnagar Metropolitan City (BMC) in Morang district to mitigate monsoon-induced disasters.

Prior to the monsoon season, the BMC undertook essential repairs and maintenance of sewers and canals within its jurisdiction. This meticulous preparation has resulted in preventing the usual flooding of areas that typically experienced inundation during rainy periods.

Local residents are rejoicing in this newfound relief. Arjun Subedi, a resident of Janapath, expressed gratitude for the BMC's prompt actions, which spared them from inundation-related problems this year. Similarly, Krishna Prasad Bhandari Marseli, a local resident and national president of the Consumer Awareness Campaign Nepal, credited the BMC's comprehensive clean-up efforts for alleviating flooding concerns and enhancing the city's appearance.

The improvements extend beyond flood prevention. BMC's proactive approach has led to more orderly streets, with shopkeepers no longer encroaching on sidewalks and pedestrians enjoying free movement. The management of public parking has also received positive feedback, and the newly elected leadership, including the mayor and deputy mayor, are being recognized for their dedication.

BMC initiated its cleanup campaign in mid-February, targeting areas prone to waterlogging due to blocked sewers and canals caused by debris and pollutants. Uttam Dhungel, President of the Public Forum, commended BMC for its commitment to sanitation, electrification, parking management, and tobacco product bans, along with its disaster preparedness efforts.

The sentiment among the public is one of praise and optimism for the Metropolis's achievements, and the hope is that BMC will continue to expand its scope of work. Ram Babu Dahal, a leader in the Civil Society, highlighted the capable leadership within BMC and its dedication to public service. He acknowledged the positive impact of the electrification campaign and emphasized the mayor's responsiveness to public issues.

Ganesh Prasad Pokharel, a local resident, noted positive changes in BMC's services under the leadership of Mayor Nagesh Koirala. He highlighted improved service delivery from subordinate offices, signaling a shift towards prompt and efficient services.

Shankar Shah, a garment trader, praised the effective implementation of the ban on tobacco products. He shared his happiness over the ban's impact on his son, who discontinued using tobacco products, showcasing the positive behavioral changes brought about by this policy. Similarly, Som Magar, a local tea seller, noticed a positive shift in consumer behavior following the ban on tobacco products in public places.

BMC's strategic efforts and proactive stance have not only averted flooding this monsoon but have also ushered in positive changes that are resonating with local residents.
